Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo – the Stephen Covey certified trainer was here with us at our Real Success Seminar on  Sunday  – 18th June, 2017 coupled with Father’s Day celebration She  continued on Habit 5: “Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood”

She said it is the longest habit and if it can be taught over a 3-day period, it will be taught for a whole day. It is a skill. We started from the state of dependence to independence.

The Habits are Verbs – action terms/ doing words and it is to be worked on. It is communication – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Listening is a  great skill but we were not taught to listen in school.  Communication is the most important skill in life. You spend years learning how to read and write, and years learning how to speak. But what about listening? What training have you had that enables you to listen so you really , deeply understand another human being? Probably none, right?

We  will be talking about listening today, because we were not taught to listen. We hear God in the stillness of the heart and it is biblical. We need to pause and listen. We must diagnose before you prescribe.  Understanding comes through listening.  If we listen first  to understand, then we will be better understood.

Poor Listening Behaviours are –

Spacing out – when one’s mind is in another place, when you are been caught up in your own thoughts.

Pretend Listening – when you are just saying yes, uh-uh, making comment but not listening.

Selective Listening – when you listen to the part that only interest you.

Word Listening – when you pay attention to the words and not the body language. You are not on same page with the speaker

Self-centred Listening – when you are listening from your own point of view.

But all ways let us try Genuine Listening…….

Empathic listening is not about agreeing with the other (showing sympathy). It is about understanding what message the other is trying to convey. It is the only form of true listening. It takes time but can be achieved.

There are ways to be a Genuine listener –

– First, listen with your eyes, heart, and ears

– Second, stand in their shoes

– Third, practice mirroring ie to say the meaning in your own words. It is difficult to say but it is better to say it.

Communication is just 7% listening words, 55% Body language and 38% tone of voice.

“Until you walk in another man’s moccasins you can’t imagine the smell” – Robert Bryne

What  we should NOT do is –

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply” – Stephen Covey

Be interested in who is talking to you because When you understand……You don’t judge. We need to learn to listen with our eyes, heart, with our ears, and really be a genuine listener.
