“Today’s newspapers will be lining tomorrow’s wastepaper bin” – From the movie Notting Hill.
Like Hyun from Korea wrote, “one of my favorite movies is Notting Hill which Julia Roberts starred. What I like the best about notting hill is that its lines are so impressive. The line that I got impressed by is “Today’s newspapers will be lining tomorrow’s wastepaper bin.”
“It means all of bad things will also pass. It is a good sentence to keep in mind when the bad thing is happened to me. Reminding this sentence makes me feel comfortable.” Hyun says!
Today it’s more than newspapers it’s television, radio and social media of every kind and we can get so bugged down with sensationalism and focus on the current happenings that we forget that tomorrow all these will likely not be that important.
From Brexit to Trump, Buhari to Tiwa Savage and many other sensational news, accusations and the millions of unsolicited analysis and comments we seem to forget that it’s just a cycle and it will continue and to build your life on these types of things or even wanting to be in the news cycle would only take us so far!
We would indeed be forgotten and our headlines become things people trample upon or use for lining a dustbin or even worse ignored even the good we do. It’s really time to stop and reevaluate our priorities. There is nothing we are complaining about we didn’t complain about before or even fears we expressed that we are still expressing today
We can because of this influence live our lives for the moment and when the attention shifts we are stuck but that’s has never been what God has in mind for us and Wordsoflife.co.uk wrote this study on THINGS BEHIND AND AHEAD, which captures the essence I think!
(Scripture Portion: Philippians 3: 12-21)
The life and ministry of the apostle Paul was dominated by one supreme objective, and it is to this that he refers in Philippians 3:13-14 - “But one thing I do. Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead, I press on towards the goal.
” Paul is employing an illustration from the realm of athletics. He pictures a Greek runner. As he runs along the prescribed course he banishes all thoughts of past failures, and he strains every nerve in an effort of tremendous concentration on reaching his goal; his one and only concern is to win the race.
Likewise, if we are to succeed in the race of life we must very deliberately “forget“, and very deliberately “press on“.
As we come to the close of the year it doesn’t matter what the headlines were in 2016 it in no way affects the things you can do in 2017 and beyond. More importantly it’s what we do for eternity that truly matters!
