APC, PDP, ADC, ANPP, SDP & NPN etc I guess this might just be me but it’s a shame that our names are still only acronyms to people even in 2018. Most people probably skimmed over these names and didn’t bother to read each one.
None of these names capture a vision or create an expectation, yet years ago in the 60’s we had names like Action Group, which at least had potentials and demonstrated some promise as well as made some impact where they ruled.
We are a nation yet we lack a documented vision which we can all at least agree too.
I believe, and this is purely me, that when we can get names for political parties that capture a vision and purpose, we would be on the first stage of a significant change in direction, not just for parties but parastatals and organizations, simply because it shows where we would be providing innovation and creativity, a bedrock of solutions to this continent’s problem.
What difference can a name make?
As a BBC report states (ironically an acronym that has changed its into a household name for news) “Traditional African names often have unique stories behind them. From the day or time a baby is born to the circumstances surrounding the birth, several factors influence the names parents choose for their children.”
As a culture, we know the power of names but we simply have lost our imagination and creativity in using african names to capture our vision and future.
It’s just a start but a great way start nonetheless because names are called even several times a day, and we all know the impact of speech on people’s lives and how much it can affect a nation or continent!
Thank you for reading.
